Abb Dickson has passed away after a long illness. Dickson was well known as a magician, a comic, an illusionist, an actor, a producer and most of all, a force of nature. He is known known for his work on the films Malibu Express (1985), Picasso Trigger (1988) and The Brass Ring (1975). For decades he was a familiar face at The Abbot’s Get Together in Colon, MI the Texas Association of Magicians (TAOM) and many other conventions. Soon he would build a friendship with some of the funniest magicians on the planet including Duke Stern and Karrell Fox. Illusionist Marcin Połoniewicz was a finalist for Poland’s got talent. Recently appeared on the Polish Saturday morning television show “Pytanie Na Sniadanie,” which translates to “Question For Breakfast.” His question to host Marzena Rogalska was “Will you risk impaling your hand on a nail?” She agreed, with a touch of reluctance. So he put a sharp nail into a paper bag, placed it alongside three other paper bags, shuffled the bags and then slammed his own hand on one of them. Of course, he was fine. On June 25, more than one hundred magicians, their spouses, friends, relatives and former winners gathered at the Garde Arts Center in New London, Connecticut, for the 2016 Milbourne Christopher Foundation awards. This was the 25th anniversary of the program created in 1991, by the late Maurine Christopher, wife of Milbourne. This was a new location for the Christopher Foundation awards which previously were presented at the S.A.M. national conventions. Founded in 1985, The Garde Arts Center, is a non-profit professional performing arts center nationally recognized for its unique architecture and multi-faceted programming. The Garde Theatre, one of the few remaining historic movie palaces in Connecticut, was built in 1926, during the golden era of the motion picture and vaudeville theatres. Siegfried Fischbacher and Roy Horn will co-produce a biopic based on their lives directed by The Physician’s Philipp Stölzl for Germany’s UFA Fiction. “The image of Siegfried and Roy floating down onto the stage in their fantastical outfits, landing amidst a pack of snow-white tigers, has been burned into my mind since I was a boy,” said Stölzl. David Bowers, The President of The Society of American Magicians, presented a special citation to the 9/11 Memorial Museum in New York City for their effort in preserving the life and legacy of John Eichler, a compeer of the S.A.M. Eichler was lost in Tower One on September 11, 2001. John was also a recipient of The Society of American Magicians Heroism and Patriot Award, which was donated and will be on display in the Museum. David Copperfield Appears on Capitol Hill to Support The Bill That Would Recognize Magic as ‘National Treasure’ The world famous illusionist, David Copperfield was on Capitol Hill with lawmakers and their staffs to discuss House Resolution 642 on Thursday, May 9th. This resolution recognizes magic as a “valuable art form and national treasure.” Copperfield is a Society of American Magicians Ambassador of Magic and was named “Magician of the Century” and dubbed the first-ever “King of Magic” by the S.A.M. America’s Got Talent returned to NBC last night and the season 11 premiere featured new judge Simon Cowell joining the panel. Simon created the Got Talent franchise and is a regular judge on Britain’s Got Talent. Mel B, Howie Mandel and Heidi Klum have all returned and the contestants continue to be outrageous as well as highly talented. They say that magicians should never repeat a trick but it looks like Milt Larsen is going to attempt to do that very thing. Sometime in the near future Milt plans to transform the Montecito Events Center into an offshoot of Hollywood’s famed nightclub The Magic Castle. Milt Larsen founded The Magic Castle with his brother Bill back in 1963 and he has recently purchased the Montecito Events Center with his wife, Arlene Larsen for $2.35 million. The 3,982-square-foot building has housed Café del Sol for nearly 50 years and will keep hosting parties for the immediate future. The site overlooks the Andree Clark Bird Refuge and occupies 11,761 square feet.
