David Blaine Returns With A New Special
Once the elections are over we can put away the political divisiveness that has gripped the United States and get back to what is really important, Magic! One week after the US elections, David Blaine will present a new special on ABC. The special is David Blaine: Beyond Magic is reportedly different from the Netflix special that debuted last month. That one was titled David Blaine: What Is Magic?
David Blaine is best known for giving the public a different view of the art of magic. He first came on the scene in the late 1990’s with his street magic specials. Blaine’s first television special, Street Magic, has been called “the best TV magic special ever done and the biggest breakthrough in our lifetime”. Blaine revolutionized the way magic is shown on television, by focusing on spectator reactions. His idea was to turn the camera around on the people watching instead of the performer, to make the audience watch the audience.
After the first couple of specials he started doing stunts that appeared to test his body’s limitations. These specials were not as interesting as the ones that featured his sleight of hand and that was reflected in his ratings. In recent years, his television appearances have become less frequent but in 2013 he returned with the ABC special David Blaine: Real or Magic, which featured Blaine performing his trademark magic for celebrities and public figures.
Tuesday night, November 15th he will return with a new special titled David Blaine: Beyond Magic, which takes the same approach, featuring Emma Stone, Johnny Depp, John Travolta, Margot Robbie, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Patrick Stewart, and more. Here is the David Blaine: Beyond Magic trailer.
David Blaine: Beyond Magic Trailer
The new television special appears to be the exact same formula as his last special, with David performing magic, puzzles and stunts for famous celebrities around the world.
David Blaine: Real or Magic was a great special, and David introduced some fun new illusions to his repertoire, making many ask the question of how far would a magician go to pull off a “trick.” Would they actually go through surgeries to perform the impossible? But there were also several things that we have seem before as Blain performed some of his classics. As always, it’s all about the reaction, and that reaction seems to be more interesting when the response is coming from someone we know and relate to.
David Blaine: Beyond Magic will premiere on November 15th, 2016 at 10:00 p.m. on ABC.
