10 Questions for magician Trigg Watson about performing on Penn & Teller’s Fool Us

Trigg Watson on Penn & Teller: Fool UsWe got the chance to sit briefly with Trigg Watson recently about his upcoming appearance on Penn & Teller; Fool Us.

How did you decide what to perform on the show?

The producers asked me to submit videos of a few different potential routines. They then responded with their preference. Because there are so many difference acts on the show, the producers were very conscious of keeping all the acts unique and different. Otherwise, every other act would have been a card trick.

When and where did you film the show?

Most of the acts were filmed throughout the month of April. The entire show was filmed in the Penn & Teller Theater at the Rio in Las Vegas.

Were you nervous about the prospect of your method being revealed by Penn & Teller?

Not really. I had watched enough episodes of the show to know that they treated all magicians with respect, and did not reveal too much information about methodology to the viewers. I felt confident that whether or not I fooled them, that it would be a positive experience and good exposure.

What was your favorite part of the whole experience?

My favorite part of the experience of taping the show was the opportunity to hang out with the other magicians. Because Fool Us is not a competitive “beat the other guy” sort of show, it really allowed all involved to enjoy each other’s company and root for the other acts.

Did you get to spend time/chat with Penn & Teller after the taping?

I did, but only briefly. They were actually flying out to do shows across the United States IN BETWEEN taping for the TV show. I have a great admiration for their work ethic.

Yes. The entire crew, from the make-up artist to the magic consultants, were very professional and made me feel at ease. Penn & Teller treated and paid the performers well for their time. Overall, it was an overwhelmingly positive experience!

What’s your favorite routine that Penn & Teller perform?

Wow. I have a lot of favorites. But I think I’d have to go with Teller’s “Rose and Her Shadow” illusion.

Who is your favorite magician working today?

Apart from Penn & Teller? I would have to say it would be a tie between comedy magician Derek Hughes and mentalist Derren Brown. I’m drawn to both of these performers because they are theatrically intelligent, and truly “get” how to nurture a relationship with their audience.

Did you fool them?
